Problems With the Engine Stalling in My 1994 Oldsmobile 88

The 1994 Oldsmobile 88 has had reports from several automobile review sites about engine problems that cause the Oldsmobile 88 to stall. Edmunds.com and Repairpal.com list concerns from owners about these engine problems as well as technical service bulletins (TSBs) and recalls. The stalling problems in the 1994 Oldsmobile 88 engine are attributed to different causes.

Fuel Filter Problems

  • The 1994 Oldsmobile 88 has had reports about the fuel filter prematurely clogging, causing the engine to stall. Repairpal.com lists a minimum of 11 reports about this problem. The fuel filter cleans the gasoline as it runs from the gas tank to the fuel injectors. Debris begins to build up in the fuel filter, causing the filter to clog, but when the material that the fuel filter is made from begins to deteriorate, the filter starts to clog prematurely. The automobile review site states that the fuel filter must be replaced every 30,000 miles to ensure that this premature fuel filter failure does not cause the engine to stall.

Mass Airflow Sensor

  • Repairpal.com and Carcomplaints.com report that 1994 Oldsmobile 88 owners are experiencing engine stalling problems because of a mass airflow sensor failing. The mass airflow sensor controls the air that flows into the intake valves. When this sensor fails, it causes the Oldsmobile to stall as the driver decelerates the vehicle. The Oldsmobile 88 has not published TSBs for this stalling problem, but there are at least 11 reports from owners about it. An owner needs to have this mass airflow sensor replaced in order to correct this stalling problem in the 1994 Oldsmobile 88.

Intake Manifold Gasket

  • Reports have been published on the 1994 Oldsmobile 88 intake manifold gasket creating internal oil leaks into the cylinders. This leaking problem causes the engine to stall because too much oil gets into the cylinders, creating low compression in the cylinder. This causes the engine to stall or miss out during normal operation. The only correction for this problem is to have the gaskets replaced with new gaskets made of a stronger material. No specific cause can be found for this premature gasket failure, but engine stalling is a good sign that the intake manifold gasket is failing.
