How to Troubleshoot Power Window Problems for a 1999 Ford Windstar

If the power windows suddenly stop working on your 1999 Ford Windstar when it's raining, you could end up very wet. Because the power window module controls the windows on a Ford Windstar, it is the main point of failure for the system. It's difficult to know when the module will fail, and there is no set service life for the Windstar's power windows. Before replacing the module, try a few simple troubleshooting procedures.

  • Open the fuse-panel cover by pulling it down. It us under the steering column.

  • Locate the fuse for the power windows, using the fuse diagram on the underside of the fuse-panel cover.

  • Pull the fuse for the power windows, using the fuse pullers in the fuse panel.

  • Check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage.

  • Check to make sure that the window lock is not on. The window lock is on the armrest, next to the power window controls. If the lock is on, the power windows will not operate.

  • Check the operation of the power windows. If the windows seem sluggish or the window motor feels weak, have it replaced by a professional mechanic.
