How to Troubleshoot ATV Battery Problems

The battery on your ATV is primarily responsible for starting your ATV. When the battery won't charge properly or has a weak charge, you may not be able to start your all terrain vehicle. You can replace the battery, or have the battery charged at most auto parts stores. However, batteries can be expensive. So, before replacing your battery, you should troubleshoot it first. You'll need a special battery charger, available at most auto parts stores, that is capable of testing the battery's ability to hold a charge.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery tester and charging device
  • Lift up on the seat of your ATV. Some ATVs have a small handle on the side of the seat that you'll need to pull up on in order to remove the seat and expose the battery.

  • Connect the red alligator clip to the positive battery terminal.

  • Connect the black alligator clip to the negative battery terminal.

  • Turn the battery tester on. The tester should read 12.7 volts. If it reads less than this, your battery is discharging and will need to be charged.
