How to Troubleshoot BMW Fog Lights

The fog lights on a BMW should be checked every six months to make sure that they are working properly. When you notice that your fog lights are not working, a few things can be wrong with them. Troubleshoot the most common problems, and you likely will be able to have working fog lights in no time.

  • Open the fuse panel cover. Turn the lock handle counterclockwise and pull down on the fuse panel cover.

  • Remove the fuse for the fog lights and check it to make sure the metal strip inside the fuse isn't burnt or broken. If it is, replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage.

  • Open the hood and check the wiring running from the fog lights to the firewall. Check for any damage to the wiring. Any frayed wires must be serviced by a professional mechanic.

  • Check the fog light bulbs. Remove the electrical connector on the fog light ballast, and turn the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it from the housing. Pull it out and check the filament inside the bulb to verify that it is still intact. Any blown bulbs need to be replaced.

  • Check the switch inside the cabin. BMW fog light switches normally light up. If you turn your switch on and it doesn't light up, your switch is probably faulty and needs to be replaced.
