Side Mirror Installation on a 1998 Honda Civic

When hanging out in high school with your friends talking cars you probably were not chatting about the 1998 Honda Civic as your dream car. By the time you hit college you were probably glad you owned it. With great fuel mileage and low maintenance costs, this car was every college kids dream when funds were tight. By 1998, this car was already on its seventh generation as Honda’s icon of the sub-compact market. Replacing the side view mirror is something you can do right at home, or on the street outside your campus housing.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 1/4-inch-drive ratchet
  • 1/4-inch-drive metric socket set
  • 1/4-inch-drive 3 inch extension
  • Slip joint pliers
  • Open the door and put the window down. Using the trim removal tool, remove the trim cover for the mirror on the door.

  • Unplug the electrical connector using the screwdriver to lift up the tab while pulling the connector. Remove the three nuts holding the mirror to the door. Start with the bottom nuts, and then remove the top nut.

  • With the slip joint pliers, squeeze the electrical plug tabs and wiggle the mirror housing at the same time. This will get the connector through the door frame and allow the housing to come out.

  • Push the new mirror into the door until the tabs on the electric plug come through the frame and click into place. Hand tighten each nut onto the studs until snug, then use the socket and ratchet to tighten them fully. Plug in the wiring harness and install the trim cover.
