How to Replace a Coil on a 1999 Blazer

Magnets and magnetic fields are not only fascinating, but also baffling to many people. On your vehicle it is hard to imagine that a magnetic field is used to turn 12 volts into about 40,000 volts or more in order to fire a spark plug. With something this amazing occurring in your 1999 Chevrolet Blazer ignition coil, there is little room for failure in this system. The good news is that if the coil fails on your Blazer, you can replace it with common tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet w/ extensions
  • Metric sockets
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Torque wrench
  • Park your Blazer on a flat surface and set the parking brake. Turn off the ignition and remove the key. Open the hood. Locate the ignition coil. It is located to the left of the throttle body. This is where the air intake tube connects to the top of the engine. The ignition coil will have a single spark plug wire going to the distributor and a connector with a pink wire and a white wire with a black stripe.

  • Remove the coil wire from the coil by pulling it from the coil and twisting it slightly. Remove the connector by lifting on the lock clip and pulling the connector from the coil. Remove the two coil mounting bolts and remove the coil from the vehicle. If your new coil does not come with a new bracket then drill out the rivets in the old bracket and install the new coil into the old bracket.

  • Install the coil and tighten the bolts to 89 inch-pounds with the torque wrench. Install the electrical connector until you feel a click. Install the coil wire until you feel it snap into place. Start the engine.
