The Purpose of Jute Padding Under Automotive Carpet

Jute padding is attached to the back of automotive carpeting. Most carpeting is cut and premolded to fit the interior of the car for which it is designed. There are several types of materials that can be used under the padding for special use such as reducing the interior sound absorption while deadening the outside-induced noises, or reducing the heat transmitted through the floor.

Additional Types of Underlayment

  • Polyfoam is a good quality underlayment with the ability to conform to curves better than jute. It has good sound-deadening properties and is less expensive. This would be used if you were custom-installing your own design of carpet. Rebound is padding made of recycled polyurethane-foam scrap material and environmentally friendly. It generally is the least expensive material.

Sound Enhancing Options

  • Mass packing made of ethylene vinyl acetate is used as a secondary backing under the padding, which gives superior sound deadening and helps to keep the carpet fibers together.

Heat-Resistant Options

  • Heavy duty aluminum-faced butyl with adhesive backing under the carpet padding further reduces noises from the vehicle’s panels, but it reduces heat transfer to the carpet and enhances the sound of your stereo. It does this by limiting the amount of interior sound absorbed by the carpet.

Conclusions

  • Most premolded replacement carpets for the automotive market arrive with the jute felt padding molded to the bottom of the carpet. In order to use another type of main padding, new carpet must be purchased in a cut-to-fit configuration. It is a good idea to add an additional underlayment for noise reduction and for a reduction in heat transfer.
