The 2-4 band servo on a transmission is used to give your vehicle more second gear. When repairing or performing maintenance on a GM 4L60E transmission, the band may need to be removed. The 2-4 band for the transmission is located inside the bell housing. Removing a band is done by separating and disassembling the transmission, which requires using the proper tools to complete the task.
Locate the bolts used to secure the bell housing to the transmission. Apply penetrating oil to each of the bolts. Loosen these bolts using a socket wrench with a star driver bit. Pull the bell housing away from the transmission.
Find the bolts used to secure the pump housing to the transmission. Remove these bolts by using the socket wrench. Pry the pump and its sealing ring from the casing with the pry bar. Do not damage the pump gasket and machined surfaces.
Pull the band anchor pin out with the pliers. If you do not have a pair of pliers, a strong magnet can also be used. Removing the band anchor pin relaxes the band to allow removal of the drum assembly.
Clean around the 2-4 band servo cover with a clean cloth. Press the band cover inward and loosen the lock ring. Remove this lock ring and pull the 2-4 servo out slightly.
Take off the input shell and the drum/clutch assembly. Remove the 2-4 band from the transmission and place it with the other parts.
