How to Clean a Fresh Air Vent in a Pontiac Grand Am

There were three separate production cycles for the Pontiac Grand Am, but production finally stopped in 2005. General Motors produced it under the Pontiac brand and it was originally a mid-size car, but later became a compact. Since the model you have will be older, it's more likely to develop odors. Starting a maintenance schedule, which includes cleaning the fresh air vents, helps elminate odors.

Things You'll Need

  • GM Vehicle Care Odor Eliminator
  • Cabin air filter (optional)
  • Visit your dealer to purchase GM Vehicle Care Odor Eliminator. It's available in 16 oz. spray bottles and dealers buy it by the case. Since it's not available in stores, purchasing at your dealer is your only choice unless you can find it online.

  • Enter your car, turn it on and check that the air fan is off. Open the front windows for ventilation and then turn off the vehicle.

  • Spray the odor eliminator into all the inside vents in your Pontiac Grand Am. Use one or two sprays in each of the vents. Start your Pontiac Grand Am and put the air fan on high cool, but don't use the air conditioning setting.

  • Go to the front of your car after getting out of your Grand Am and closing the door. Find the fresh air vent located under the cowl--you may have to open the hood to see it clearly. The cowl is in the area closest to the windshield at the base of your hood. Spray the vent 10 times with the odor eliminator.

  • Enter your Grand Am after a minute and wipe away any excess formula that's coming out of the vents. Check the smells coming from the vents. If there are still odors, go back to the outside vent and spray the odor eliminator five more times.

  • Continue performing Steps 4 and 5 until there aren't any odors in your Pontiac Grand Am. Then, change your vent control to air conditioning, set it on recirculation and close the windows. After spraying the odor eliminator into the lower right instrument panel area, run your Grand Am for five to seven minutes.

  • Find the cabin air filter if your Pontiac Grand Am comes equipped with one. Replacing this filter helps eliminate odors. It's located either behind the glove compartment, under the dashboard or in the engine chamber. Turn your car off and exit your Grand Am.
