How to Change an Alternator on a 2006 Ford F-350

The 2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty truck was available in both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions. The base engine in the 2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty was a 5.4-liter V-8, which produced 300-horsepower. A 6.0-liter V-8 turbo diesel, and a 7.3-liter Triton V-10 were optional engines for the 2006 F-350 Super Duty. Replacing the alternator on this model is usually done when the alternator is no longer charging the battery or batteries in the truck. Failing alternators can cause a multitude of electric symptoms in a vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet and socket set
  • New alternator
  • 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and socket set (reading foot-pounds)
  • 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench (reading inch-pounds)
  • Open the hood of the F-350. Loosen the negative battery cable tie-down nut with a ratchet and socket, then remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Tuck the cable down to the side of the battery, so that there is no chance of contact during this project.

  • Install a ratchet onto the tensioner assembly, in the square hole provided in the tensioner body. Turn the tensioner downward to release the tension on the drive belt. Remove the drive belt from the alternator (there is no need to remove the belt from any other part on the engine).

  • Remove the two cable nuts from the alternator with a ratchet and socket. Remove all of the cables on the alternator, by hand. Use your thumb to depress the small release tab on the positive battery cable. Remove a total of three wires from the alternator, then remove the alternator bracket bolts with a ratchet and socket.

  • Remove the two alternator-to-engine mounting bolts from the bottom of the alternator, using a ratchet and socket. Raise the alternator upward and toward you to remove it from the engine.

  • Install the new alternator on the engine, and tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 18 foot-pounds with a 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and socket. Install the electrical connectors onto the new alternator. Tighten the B+ wire nut and the negative battery cable nut with a ratchet and socket, until they are snug. Plug the positive cable connector into the side port on the new alternator.

  • Install the alternator mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to 89 inch-pounds, using a 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench and socket. Depress the tensioner assembly again with your 3/8-inch-drive ratchet and install the drive belt onto the new alternator. Check the alignment of the drive belt on each engine pulley. If the belt is off-centered, depress the tensioner halfway and make the proper adjustments.

  • Install the negative battery cable onto the battery and tighten the cable nut snug with a ratchet and socket.
