How to Fix Fading on Plastic

You exhaust your energy and time protecting the shine of your car from the elements. Mud, rain, sleet and snow do little damage to your car's exterior in comparison to the sun. Your car can bake in the sun for hours. The plastic parts on your car (bumpers, fenders, mirror covers, luggage racks) will fade over time from constant exposure. With the aide of a heat gun, make your faded plastic parts look new again.

Things You'll Need

  • Soap
  • Bucket
  • Terry cloth
  • Heat gun
  • Wash the plastic area that is faded.

  • Thoroughly dry off the area with your towel.

  • Examine the surface for extra dirt or other particles, as heating technique will "bake" in unwanted particles to the surface of your plastic.

  • Turn on your heat gun, applying hot air to the plastic part. Hold your heat gun in a circular fashion approximately 2 inches off the surface of the plastic.

  • Continue applying hot air to the surface in small segments. Surface will become glossy or have a sheen as plastic is reconditioning. Move on to another segment until the plastic part is finished.
