How to Install a Three Inch Body Lift on a Toyota 4x4

In the automotive world, a body lift is a way to put larger wheels on your vehicle. Installing a body lift on your Toyota 4X4 will let you maneuver much better when off-roading. It will also let you drive through higher water and more mud. Even if you are not taking your 4X4 through the deep mud, you might still enjoy the look the lift gives your truck.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 3-inch tall blocks of polyurethane
  • 12 mm spanner
  • 14 mm spanner
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 4 3" radiator drop brackets
  • Jack
  • Gear shifter extended
  • 4 6.5-inch bolts
  • 4 5.5-inch bolts
  • 2 5-inch bolts
  • Remove the Toyota's nudge bar, front bumper and lower radiator shroud. If you do not have a bull bar or nudge bar, remove only the front bumper and lower radiator shroud. Locate the front and rear body mounts. The body mount bolts are under the carpet. You will have to remove the front seats to access the front bolts.

  • Remove all body mount bolts. Begin raising the vehicle frame slowly so as not to damage any hoses, wires or other parts. Once the vehicle is raised to the appropriate height for the lift, place the first three-inch polyurethane block over the bolt. Continue to do this for all body mount bolts around the vehicle and then tighten each.

  • Create and attach three-inch brackets to hold the radiator and bumper in their new locations. One of the bolts should be welded to the bracket and counter sunk to fit even in the original location on the body. Re-attach the bumper and nudge bar or bull bar if you have one.

  • Insert two screw drivers into the top of the gearshift and turn to unlock it. The gear stick needs to be cut, and a new rod that is three inches long inserted and welded.

  • Recheck the bolts after a day or two of driving just to be sure everything is tight. You can now safely put bigger rims and tires on your vehicle.
