The Focus is a small automobile equipped with a front-mounted engine and a front-drive system; it was first introduced in North America as a 2000 model by Ford Motor Co. The transverse-mounted, four-cylinder engine is mated to either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transaxle. The electrical circuits in the Focus are protected from overloading and short circuits by fuses located in one of two fuse panels -- one in the passenger compartment and one under the hood. The fuse which protects the cigarette lighter and its wiring should be the first thing to check if the lighter quits working.
Locate the passenger compartment fuse panel access cover on the lower side of the dashboard, to the left of the steering column.
Pull the cover straight out from the bottom, to release the retaining clips. Slide the cover downwards slightly, then remove it from the dashboard.
Locate the cigar lighter fuse -- which is position 46 in the fuse panel. Find this position by counting the sixth position from the left, in the second row of fuses from the bottom.
Spread the jaws of a fuse puller apart with your fingers, and slip them over the cigarette lighter fuse. Squeeze the handles of the puller together so that the edges of the puller grip over the top part of the fuse. Pull straight out on the fuse puller to remove the fuse from the fuse panel.
Use the fuse puller in the same fashion and push a blue, 15 amp fuse into the fuse panel, where the previous fuse was installed, until it is fully seated.
Slide the tab located on the upper end of the fuse panel access cover into the slot in the top of the dashboard opening. Push the lower part of the panel inward, until the retaining clips hold the panel firmly in place.
