How to Replace Your GMC Upholstery

The upholstery in your GMC vehicle is made up of the fabric which covers the padding and frame of the seat. Replacing damaged upholstery is a simple task that involves removing the old upholstery and replacing it with new seat covers. You can order a replacement upholstery cover from any specialist supplier. The covers come already cut to size and it is just a matter of lifting them over the seats and securing them in place. The job will take a couple of hours to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Upholstery covers

Front bucket seats

  • Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts which fix the front bucket seat on to the floor of your GMC vehicle. Lift the seat out of the vehicle.

  • Move the seat to a clear work area. Turn the seat upside down. Locate the bolts on the bottom of the seat that secure the upholstery covers on to the seat. Remove the bolts using a socket wrench. Keep the bolts in a safe area for reattachment later.

  • Slide the upholstery covers up the seat all the way to the top. Lift the cover off the top of the seat to remove it completely. Discard the damaged cover.

  • Place the opening of the new upholstery cover over the top of the seat. Pull the cover down the seat so that it covers the entire seat. Reattach the bolts to the underside of the seat with a socket wrench to secure the new seat upholstery in place.

  • Lift the seat back into your GMC vehicle. Secure the mounting bolts between the seat and the floor of the vehicle in order to secure it back in place. Repeat the process on the second front seat.

Rear bench seat

  • Remove the mounting bolts on each corner of the bench seat which holds it in place using a socket wrench.

  • Open up the trunk door of your GMC and pull the bench seat out and away from the vehicle.

  • Remove the bolts on the back of the seat which hold the upholstery in place with the wrench.

  • Pull the old upholstery away from the bench seat and replace with the new upholstery seat covers.

  • Lift the bench seat back in to the back seat area of your GMC. Secure the bench seat in place by reattaching the mounting bolts.
