How to Replace Chevy Tahoe Door Hinges

The doors of your Chevrolet Tahoe are secured to the vehicle through five hinges. There is one hinge that connects to the roof panel, another that connects to the rocker panel, one that connects to the rear pillar, another connected to the front pillar, and one final hinge that connects to the truck fender. Replacing any of the door hinges is simply a matter of using a socket wrench to remove the hinge's bolt and installing a new hinge. Replacement hinges can be purchased at most automotive shops and are fairly inexpensive.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface away from traffic, turn off the engine and open the door.

  • Have a helper support the door -- or else place a physical support under the bottom frame of the door -- before removing any of the bolts. Removing the bolts without supporting the door could cause stress or damage to the other door hinges, or the door itself.

  • Use a socket wrench to remove the desired hinge by uninstalling its bolts. Depending on the particular model and year, you may need a different size socket. The door-to-roof panel and door-to-rocket panel bolts are 6mm. The door-to-rear pillar bolt is 4mm. The door-to-front pillar bolt is 7mm. The door-to-fender bolt is 5mm. Once the bolts are removed, pull the hinge from the door.

  • Attach a replacement hinge and reinstall the bolts with a socket wrench. Open and close the door to test for level swing and correct meeting with the lock.
