How to Install a Chrysler LHS Fuel Pump

A skilled auto repair professional can install a Chrysler LHS fuel pump in about an hour. The Chrysler LHS fuel pump mounts to the top of the gas tank, located under the rear of the car. The location of the pump is strategic--it allows the body of the pump to hang down into the gasoline inside the tank and is used to cool and lubricate itself. The pump draws gasoline up and out of the tank and sends the gasoline forward to the LHS's fuel injectors, located atop the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery wrench
  • 2 Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack
  • 2 Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Rag
  • Screwdriver
  • Rubber Mallet
  • Open the LHS's hood by hand. Unhook the negative battery cable where it meets the battery using the battery wrench.

  • Shove the wheel chocks against the front and rear of the left-front tire to prevent the LHS from rolling. Lift the LHS's back end off the ground with the floor jack. Place a jack stand under the rear body rail lift point, located just in front of the rear wheel wells. Lower the LHS onto the jack stands with the floor jack.

  • Manually move the floor jack beneath the gas tank. Lift the jack head up until it contacts the bottom of the gas tank. Unbolt the two gas tank retaining bands using a socket set.

  • Lower the gas tank several inches to allow yourself room to reach between the tank and the LHS's floorboard. Your goal is to disconnect the fuel lines and fuel pump wiring harness from the fuel pump using your hands.

  • Bring the gas tank down completely with the floor jack. Pull the jack and tank out from under the LHS by hand. Pick up the gas tank, move it off the jack and set it on the ground.

  • Place a rag over the tip of the screwdriver and then place the screwdriver tip against the vertical edge of the fuel pump retainer ring. Tap the handle of the screwdriver with the rubber mallet to spin the ring counterclockwise.

  • Lift the old fuel pump out of the LHS's gas tank by hand. Set it aside. Lower the new fuel pump into the tank. Be certain that you orient the fuel pump sender float in a position that allows it to move freely inside the tank.

  • Turn the fuel pump retainer ring clockwise to lock the fuel pump in place. Return the gas tank to the floor jack and roll them both back under the LHS.

  • Reverse the way you installed the gas tank and reinstall. Lower the LHS off the jack stands with your floor jack. Rehook the battery cable to the battery and close the hood.

  • Turn the ignition key to the run position for ten seconds; this will prime the fuel system before starting the car. It may be necessary to repeat this step before the LHS will start.
