The Volvo 2.5-liter B525 series is a five-cylinder engine used in multiple vehicle applications such as the Volvo S60, V70, XC70 Cross Country, S80, XC90 and Ford Focus RS. Variations of the B525 series include the 208-horsepower B5254T2 and the more powerful 300-horsepower B5254T2-R. Replacing the upper engine mount bushing may alleviate problems associated with excessive engine vibration, which could lead to power train component damage if left unchecked. Performing the task of replacing upper engine mount bushing only requires a few simple tools.
Place the vehicle’s transmission in “Park” or set the parking brake. Open the hood and allow the engine to cool before working on the vehicle.
Examine the engine compartment and locate the upper engine mount. The upper engine mount has a large round-shaped black rubber bushing and metal bracket, positioned to the top-right of the motor.
Remove the large bolt and nut running through the center of the engine mount bushing. You will need to stabilize the bolt head with a crescent wrench, while using an appropriate size deep well socket and ratchet to remove the nut.
Tap the bolt out of the bushing sleeve with the aid of a hammer. If you have difficulty removing the bolt from the bushing assembly, turn the bolt counterclockwise with the socket or adjustable wrench, while rocking the engine back and forth. Rocking the engine will relieve the pressure applied to the bolt, caused by a misalignment between the bushing sleeve and the firewall bracket holes.
Set the large bolt, nut and washers aside. Insert a hacksaw blade through the open side of the bushing, with the serrated edge facing up.
Cut through the ringed portion of the bushing using the hacksaw blade. Cutting through the bushing ring will allow the bushing to collapse, allowing for easier removal. Avoid cutting or damaging the surrounding metal housing, containing the rubber bushing.
Remove the bushing from either side of the motor mount housing.
Slide the new bushing into the motor mount housing. Attempt to slide the large bolt through the motor mount bracket and the bushing sleeve. If a misalignment between the center bushing sleeve and firewall bracket prevent you from sliding the bolt through, use the same methods described in Step 4 to aid the installation process.
Secure the nut to the large bolt using an appropriate size socket and adjustable wrench. Clean off any rubber shavings left on the engine before driving the vehicle or starting the engine.
