How to Fix a Wheel Bearing on a Nissan Maxima

The wheel bearings in your Nissan Maxima help ensure that the wheels on your car turn in a smooth motion. If the bearings become damaged it can affect the stability and steering of your vehicle. If you hear a grinding noise coming from your wheels it is an indication that you need to replace the bearings. If this occurs you should replace the bearings right away.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Car jack
  • Jack stand
  • Wheel bearings
  • Bearing grease
  • Place a car jack underneath your Maxima so that it is closer to the wheel you are working on. Raise the wheel off the ground. Provide extra support for the wheel with jack stands.

  • Use a wrench to remove the lug nuts attached to the wheel. Remove the wheel from the vehicle.

  • Remove the mounting bolts from the brake caliper with a wrench. Move the caliper out of the way to gain access to the rotor. Remove the retaining nut from the back of the rotor and lift the rotor away from the wheel assembly.

  • Take the mounting bolts from the wheel hub. Use a wooden mallet to carefully knock the hub gently out of place. Pull the hub away from the wheel. Slide the inner and outer bearings out of the wheel.

  • Check the quality of the bearings to see if there are any holes or grooves present on the bearings. If there are then you should discard them and replace them. Apply a thin layer of grease to the bearings and reattach them to the wheel. Reassemble the wheel by following the removal steps in reverse.
