How to Repair the IAC Valve on a Nissan

The idle air control valve is part of the air intake system on Nissan vehicles. It is a computer-controlled component that regulates the airflow into the throttle body in order to control the idle speed. IAC valves are not user-servicable units and must be completely replaced when faulty. Replacement IAC valves are available from auto parts stores and licensed Nissan parts resellers.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx-head screwdriver
  • Replacement IAC valve
  • Place the Nissan's transmission into park or first gear. Turn off the engine and set the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool for at least 1 hour.

  • Open the hood and locate the IAC valve. It is approximately 1-inch in diameter, made from black plastic and protrudes from the left side of the throttle body.

  • Depress the locking tab on the IAC valve's electrical connector and remove the connector from the valve. Remove the two Torx screws holding the IAC valve to the throttle body using a Torx screwdriver. Remove the IAC valve from the throttle body.

  • Place the new IAC valve onto the throttle body and reinstall the Torx screws. Reconnect the sensor's electrical connector.

  • Start the engine and verify that the IAC valve operates properly. The idle should be smooth and steady.
