How to Replace the Throttle Position Sensor in a Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee led the way for the mid-size SUV in the early 1990s as the better version of the Jeep's popular Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee had plenty of room for a family and yet was handsome enough for the night on the town. This is an intermediate level do-it-yourself project to replace the throttle position sensor.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches, screwdrivers
  • Replacement gasket
  • Torque wrench
  • Plastic scraper
  • Make sure the engine is completely cool. Disconnect the battery ground.

  • Disengage the throttle position sensor electrical connector. Loosen the screws that secure the throttle position sensor and remove them. Take the throttle position sensor off the throttle body.

  • Locate the throttle shaft end of the throttle body. Slide the throttle shaft end into the socket on the throttle position sensor. Make sure the throttle position sensor can be rotated a few degrees in either direction.

  • Check the throttle position sensor for proper installation. Note a slight tension upon rotation.

  • Set the throttle position sensor into place and hand-tighten the screws. Torque the screws to 60 inch pounds.

  • Attach the electrical connector to the throttle position sensor. Operate the throttle by hand to make sure there is no binding.

  • Reconnect the battery ground cable. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
