How to Tighten a Shifter Knob on a 2006 Cadillac CTS

Grabbing the shifter only to feel the knob wobble is, to say the least, a disappointment in a luxury vehicle like a Cadillac CTS. Fixing the problem only requires a few simple steps, two tools and a drop of sealant. In just a few minutes, your 2006 Cadillac CTS shifter will feel like it did on the showroom floor. This process only works for a loose knob, not a loose shifting bar.

Things You'll Need

  • T15 torx screwdriver
  • Flat bladed screwdriver
  • Blue 242 threadlocker sealant
  • Turn the car off.

  • Place the car in reverse or neutral, or in any position that will give you enough space to fit the screwdrivers under the shifter knob. Neutral is acceptable, but be aware that the shifter can move in that position, possibly causing the screwdriver to slip and scratch the shifter.

  • Locate a small square chrome metal piece toward the underside of the shifter knob.

  • Slid the plate back, using the flat bladed screwdriver, a knife or some rigid thin instrument. Behind the plate is a small Torx screw, which looks like a star.

  • Remove the Torx screw and apply threadlocker sealant to the threads of the screw. It generally takes only a drop of the sealant. Refer to the instructions on the brand of threadlocker you purchased for the specific amount to apply.

  • Replace the screw.

  • Tighten the Torx screw with the T15 Torx screwdriver until it is tight and the knob is no longer loose. General Motors specifies 22 lbs. of torque; this is about how much a hand-tightened screwdriver will produce. Place a small amount of pressure on the knob and gently wiggle it while tightening the screw. This ensures the knob is properly seated and tightens fully.

  • Slid the chrome metal cover back into place.
