How to Find the ECU in a 2001 Ford Windstar

The engine control unit (ECU) in a 2001 Ford Windstar is the main computer responsible for controlling the engine's electronic functions, such as the fuel injection and the ignition timing. The ECU actively collects data from a number of sensors throughout the vehicle to manage the engine. When the ECU fails, a number of drivability symptoms can occur, such as erratic engine performance or a no start condition. Replacement ECUs are available from Ford dealerships and automotive salvage yards.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Shift the transmission into park and shut off the engine. Set the parking brake and open the hood.

  • Remove the plastic pushpins from the vent shroud between the hood and the windshield with a flat head screwdriver. Remove the vent shroud from the vehicle and set the pushpins aside.

  • Shine a flashlight into the cavity between the windshield and the hood on the passenger's side near the fender, approximately 5 inches to the left of the passenger's side windshield wiper.

  • Look directly down where the light is shining. The ECM is square, made from aluminum and is bolted to the firewall.
