How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 1998 Subaru Forester

The fuel pump drives gas from your Forester's fuel tank to the engine. After extended use, heat and current will wear the pump down. If you delay cleaning your fuel filter or often drive with a nearly empty fuel tank, the pump will wear out even faster. Access the pump through a panel in the trunk and insert a replacement. Replacing the fuel pump will help increase the vehicle's fuel injection system's efficiency, improving engine performance.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch wrench
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Rag
  • Rubber gloves
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement fuel pump
  • Put on the gloves. Open the Forester's hood.

  • Locate the battery box at the front of the engine compartment on the driver's side.

  • Use the 1/2-inch wrench to loosen the nut at the battery's negative terminal. The negative terminal is on the right of the Forester's battery. The positive one is on the left.

  • Open the Subaru's trunk. Lift the trunk panel from the bottom of the compartment on the driver's side. You will see the fuel sender access panel below it.

  • Loosen the fuel sender access panel's bolts, using the socket wrench. Lift off the panel, exposing the fuel pump.

  • Pull apart the pump's electrical connectors.

  • Loosen the clasp attaching the pump to the fuel lines using the 1/2-inch wrench. If any fuel spills out, clean it up immediately with the rag.

  • Take out the old electrical fuel pump. Place the new one in the compartment.

  • Clamp the fuel line to the new pump. Join the electrical connectors.

  • Replace the fuel sender access panel and the trunk panel. Reattach the battery's negative cable to its terminal.
