How to Remove Scratches From an Instrument Panel Lens

On older vehicles, you will notice that the plastic cover for the instrument panel becomes scratched and dull. This can hinder your view of the instrument panel and it make the automobile look worn out. Once you have the dash taken apart, you may wonder how to get the scratches out of the instrument panel lens. With a little hard work you can make that lens look brand new.

Things You'll Need

  • Soapy water
  • Clean rags
  • Plastic polishing compound
  • Clean both sides of the lens with warm soapy water to remove dust, dirt and grease. Dust can cause more scratches as you buff the lens. Wipe the plastic dry with a clean rag.

  • Place a small amount of plastic scratch remover onto a clean cotton rag and buff the scratches off the front side of the lens.

  • Wipe the surface clean of the buffing compound every few minutes to keep the abrasives from drying out and causing scratches. Use warm soapy water to do this. Repeat the process until the lens looks clear.

  • Clean the lens with warm soapy water to remove any old compound and dry it with a clean cotton rag before installing the lens back into the vehicle.
