How to Replace a Cavalier Alternator

The Chevrolet Cavalier uses the standard automobile alternator. It provides electrical power to the battery, which provides the power to the car. Alternator's need replacement after eight to10 years, on average. They fail slowly, giving the vehicle's owner time to diagnose the problem and make the necessary repairs. Indications that the alternator is failing are constantly having to jump-start the battery, dim interior and exterior lights and very low voltage indicated on the dash or a voltage regulator.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Torque wrench

Removal

  • Open the hood to the Chevrolet Cavalier and disconnect the negative battery cable using the appropriate wrench.

  • Locate the wiring attached to the back of the alternator. There will be a black boot covering the wiring connector. Pull the black boot back to reveal the nut holding the connector to the alternator. Remove the nut using an open-end wrench.

  • Locate the two bolts holding the alternator to its mounting bracket. Remove the lower bolt using a wrench and loosen the upper bolt to create slack in the serpentine belt.

  • Pull the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley with your hands. It should be loose and almost fall off on its own. Remove the upper alternator bolt from the alternator bracket. Pull out the alternator.

Replacement

  • Slide the new Cavalier alternator on the alternator bracket. Slide the upper and lower alternator bolts into place. Tighten the lower alternator bolt using a wrench.

  • Pull the serpentine belt up and around the alternator and place it on the alternator pulley. The serpentine belt should be very loose. Tighten the upper alternator bolt to the alternator bracket. This is to tighten the serpentine belt.

  • Replace the alternator connector to the back of the new alternator. Secure the wires with the nut and tighten with a wrench. Slide the black boot back over the nut.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the car.
