Homemade Tractor Wheel Weights

Many tractor owners choose to increase the weight of the tractor by adding wheel weights. This is done to increase the tractor's overall traction which prevents the tractor from getting stuck in the mud. There are various ways to add weight to a tractor's rear wheels, such as metal one-piece wheel weights. You can build your own one-piece wheel weights with items found at many hardware stores for a low price. This can be much more cost-efficient than purchasing wheel weights.

Things You'll Need

  • Scrap metal sheets
  • Handheld grinder
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Welding tools
  • Safety glasses
  • Permanent marker
  • Vise
  • Determine the thickness of the wheel weights you desire. Perform research on what the recommended wheel weights are for your tractor model.

  • Measure the diameter of your tractor's rear wheels with the measuring tape.

  • Use the hand-held grinder to cut out a circular shape from the sheet of scrap metal. If the sheet is not thick enough to meet your weight requirements, cut circular shapes from additional scrap metal sheets. Tack weld the sheets together until you achieve the desired thickness.

  • Repeat the procedures in Step 3 for the remaining wheel.

  • Unbolt the first wheel and remove it so you can install the weight.

  • Hold the circular weight against the wheel hub to determine where the bolts will go. Make marks with the permanent marker where the bolts are located.

  • Secure the circular piece of scrap metal with the vise. Drill holes into the metal with the appropriate drill bit. Hold the drill steady with both hands and drill slowly so the drill will not slip.

  • Affix the weight to the wheel hub and reattach the wheel by securing the bolts.

  • Repeat Steps 6 to 8 for the tractor's remaining rear wheel.
