How to Reset the CKP Sensor on a 2002 Chevy Malibu

The CKP sensor (crankshaft position sensor) in your Malibu provides a signal that is used by the on-board computer to determine where the engine is in its rotation. With this signal, fuel delivery and ignition timing can be controlled accurately. When a malfunction occurs in the sensor, or a repair is made that affects the sensor, a CKP sensor code may need to be reset to allow the computer to recognize the repair. This can be done in just a few minutes by the home auto enthusiast.

Things You'll Need

  • Scan Tool
  • Complete all CKP sensor related repairs to the Malibu. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

  • Plug the scan tool's cable into the OBD-II diagnostic connector located under the dash. In the 2002 Malibu, the connector is located under the driver's side of the dash to the left of the steering column.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "On" position. Select "Generic" or "Global" OBD-II from the menu if you are using a professional grade scan tool. Select "Clear DTC" or "Erase Codes" and then select "Yes" when the tool asks if you are sure you want to erase the codes. If you have a less expensive basic scan tool, select "Erase Codes" from the menu, or push the "Erase" button on the control panel of the tool.

  • Wait a few seconds as the tool performs the function and resets the CKP sensor fault code and restores the proper computer functions. Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position and remove the tool from the diagnostic connector.
