How to Change Chevrolet Daytime Running Lights

Chevrolet vehicles have two different daytime running light systems. There is a separate bulb assembly and there is the use of the high beams at a lower setting. Depending on the type of Chevrolet vehicle you own, accessing either assembly may require going through the wheel well or simply opening the hood. Check your owner's manual to discover what type of system your vehicle has. Older Chevy vehicles have the separate assembly, whereas newer models tend to use the high beam headlights at a lower setting.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Clean cloth
  • Replacement bulb

Changing the High Beams (Hood)

  • Raise the hood of your vehicle.

  • Remove the two pins or two retaining screws atop the headlamp assembly. This depends on the type of Chevrolet you have.

  • Pull the headlight assembly out of the vehicle and disconnect the electric plug at the rear of the assembly.

  • Pull the high beam headlight socket out of the assembly and pull the old bulb out of the socket. Install a new bulb into the socket and place it back into the assembly. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reconnect the electric plug.

  • Reattach the pins or screws and close the hood.

Changing the High Beams (Wheel Well)

  • Turn the wheels as far inward as they can go.

  • Crawl under the vehicle and remove the screws holding the wheel well access panel cover into place. Remove the wheel well access panel cover.

  • Reach into the wheel well and locate the high beam headlight socket. It will be the smaller of the two sockets. Rotate it counterclockwise and remove it from the vehicle.

  • Pull the old bulb out of the socket and install a new bulb. Place the socket back into the assembly and rotate it clockwise to secure.

  • Reattach the wheel well access cover panel and reinstall the screws.

Separate Assembly (Hood)

  • Raise the hood of your vehicle.

  • Remove the two pins or two retaining screws atop the headlamp assembly. This depends on the type of Chevrolet vehicle you have.

  • Pull the headlight assembly out of the vehicle and disconnect the electric plug at the rear of the assembly. You will now be able to access the turn signal assembly. Pull the turn signal assembly out of the vehicle and disconnect the electric plug on the turn signal assembly as well.

  • Remove the daytime running lamp socket from the turn signal assembly and pull out the old bulb. Install a new bulb into the socket and place the socket back into the assembly. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reconnect the plug. Place the headlight assembly back into the vehicle and reconnect the plug.

  • Reinstall the pins or screws and close the hood.

Separate Assembly (Wheel Well)

  • Turn the wheels as far inward as they can go.

  • Crawl under the vehicle and remove the screws holding the wheel well access panel cover into place. Remove the wheel well access panel cover.

  • Reach into the wheel well and locate the daytime running lamp socket. The daytime running lamp socket will be the smallest socket on the assembly. Pull the socket out of the assembly.

  • Pull the old bulb out of the socket and install a new bulb. Place the socket back into the assembly and rotate it clockwise to secure.

  • Reattach the wheel well access cover panel and reinstall the screws.
