How to Tune up a 2006 Chevy Aveo

The 2006 Aveo is a small car from Chevrolet that comes in six different models. The car is relatively easy to tune up yourself if you have some prior experience with automobiles and can be done fairly inexpensively. A car tuneup involves the replacement of certain parts to keep your car running strong and can greatly extend the life of your vehicle as well as improve its overall performance. A tuneup should be performed every two years or 30,000 miles.

Things You'll Need

  • Spark plugs (4)
  • Spark plug wires
  • Oil filter
  • 4 quarts of 10W-30 oil
  • Air filter
  • Wrench
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Transmission fluid
  • Fuel injector cleaner
  • Change the spark plugs. First, remove the engine valve cover with a wrench. Access the spark plugs by removing the spark plug wires from the engine cylinders. Remove the spark plugs at the bottom of the cylinder with a long spark plug wrench turned counterclockwise. Replace the spark plugs in the cylinders with the wrench turned clockwise. Purchase iridium spark plugs do not have to be gapped.

  • Replace the spark plug wires. These wires run from the distributor cap to the cylinders and provide the electricity for the spark plugs which, in turn, ignites the engine. The wires can be replaced individually, though when you replace one you should always replace them all so they degrade at the same rate.

  • Change the air filter. This filter is designed to sift out dirt or other particles that can potentially enter the engine through the air intake. Replace the filter by unscrewing the cover for the air box on the left side of the engine chassis and simply lifting it out and replacing it with a new one.

  • Perform an oil and filter change. Lift the front of the Aveo with a jack and secure the car on jack stands. Place a drain pan under the oil reservoir and loosen the reservoir bolt to drain the oil. Once the oil has drained, tighten the bolt and replace the oil filter. The oil filter is underneath the engine a few inches above the oil reservoir, jutting out of its side. You can remove it either by hand or with an oil filter wrench. After replacing the filter, pour in 4 quarts of 10W-30 oil via the fill hole on top of the engine. Use a funnel to avoid spillage.

  • Refill all of the engine fluids, including the washer and transmission fluids. The reservoirs for these will be clearly labeled, and their exact locations can be found in the engine schematic in your owner's manual.

  • Add fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank. This chemical cleans out gunk or residue in the fuel tank, allowing fuel to burn a little cleaner and more efficiently.
