1998 Dodge RAM 1500 Won't Start

If your 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 will not start, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try before you take it to a mechanic. Troubleshooting with these steps will save you money and time if you can figure out and fix the problem. Even if you do not figure out the exact problem, you might be able to narrow it down which will help the mechanic fix your Ram more quickly.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench set
  • Wire brush
  • Clean paper towels
  • Release the hood, open it, and secure it with the hood arm.

  • Check the battery for signs of corrosion. Corrosion looks like white crust around the battery terminals and cables.

  • Use the wire brush to clean the battery and its terminals if you notice corrosion.

  • Pull the battery cables with gentle to moderate force. If they come off, they need to be tightened with your crescent wrench.

  • Put your key in the ignition and turn it to accessories. Turn on your headlights and check to see if they came on. If they did, then your battery is fine.

  • Turn your key to the on position in the ignition. Before you start your Dodge Ram, the warning indicators on the dash board should light up. If you have already checked the battery, and the warning lights do not come on, you will need to replace the ignition switch.

  • Check your gas gauge. You probably didn't run out of gas, but don't let pride keep you from double checking the gas gauge. Almost everyone has run out of gas at one point or another. If your tank is on empty, you will need to purchase around three gallons of gas to get your truck moving and into a gas station.

  • Check the distributor cap. If you have had a lot of rain or very moist weather, it is possible that moisture has crept into the distributor and caused your engine to stop functioning. Remove the distributor cap and inspect it for any moisture. If you see any moisture at all use your clean paper towels to dry it completely. Check the cap for any breaks, cracks or mutilation as these injuries can cause the cap to leak. Return the cap and try your engine again.
