How to Tow a Toyota

Towing a Toyota can be expensive when using a professional towing service, so sometimes towing it with a friend or family member can be less expensive. The tow rope should be between 12 to 16 feet and have a metal hook on each end. This allows for improperly tied knots to not be an issue. When towing the car, make sure the tow rope is attached to the vehicle's frame so you don't cause any damage.

Things You'll Need

  • 12 to 16 feet tow rope with a metal hook on each end
  • Place one of the tow rope hooks underneath the front of the car being towed. Make sure the hook rests on part of the car's frame, such as where the control arm attaches to the car frame, or a towing hook (these do not exist on all models). Do not attach the hook on the car bumper. It will not be strong enough to pull the car and will probably break off.

  • Attach the free hook on the other end of the towing rope to the back car frame of the vehicle doing the towing. It is also possible to wrap the tow rope around a trailer hitch and place the hook into one of the safety chain holes located on either side of where the hitch attaches to the vehicle.

  • Gently drive forward until there is enough tension in the tow rope to pull the car being towed. Have a person in the towed car steer and brake to help in turning and to make sure the car does not run into the vehicle doing the towing. This person also comes in handy if anything else goes wrong with the car or if something happens to the tow rope; they can honk the horn as a signal for the towing vehicle to stop so the problem can be assessed.
