How to Remove a Steering Column Lock

A steering column lock is an anti-theft device you can install around your steering column, and in most cases, over the key assembly to give your vehicle another layer of security. The pick-resistant lock is particularly effective since in most cases it cannot be cut, denying anyone access to the steering column and ignition switch to start the vehicle. That is, unless you're the vehicle's owner and happen to have the key. Remember, the type of lock you end up buying depends on your vehicle's make and model.

  • Sit in the driver's side seat and locate the actual lock on the steering column lock assembly. On some models it will be a padlock that is separate from the assembly itself. In those cases, the padlock may be protected by a set of ears to prevent it from being cut. On some models, the lock is part of the assembly.

  • Insert the steering column lock key that came with the assembly. It's imperative that you hold on to this key, as this is the only way for you to remove the assembly, without risking damaging the steering column itself. Turn off the key to remove the lock.

  • Remove the lock carefully to uncover the key assembly or unlock the steering column. If you happen to lose the key, have a service technician inspect the lock assembly and decide how to remove it.
