How to Change the Rear Wheel Bearing for a Ford Escort

Rear wheel bearings play a major role in helping a Ford Escort to move. Over time, these bearings can become worn and broken, requiring replacement. If you hear a grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, it is an indication the rear bearings need replacing. If the rear wheel bearings require replacement, the work must be carried out immediately. The process can be tricky, but with correct preparation, it can be completed by anyone.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wrench set
  • Screwdriver set
  • Pliers
  • Raise the vehicle off the floor using a car jack. Support the car jack by also placing jack stands in place.

  • Use a wrench to remove the lug nuts from the rear wheel. Remove the wheel off the axle, and place it in a safe location.

  • Remove the axle retaining nut underneath the wheel cap. This will allow you to then remove the lock plate. Disconnect the brake caliper and the brake sensors from their connectors. Loosen the safety bolts to completely remove the brake caliper.

  • Take the bearing clip off the hub with pliers. Remove the bearings, and clean them with a dry cloth. If any holes or scratches are in the bearings, you must replace them.

  • Put the brake system and the wheel back together using the removal steps in reverse. Repeat the process on the second rear wheel. Once the process is complete, drive the vehicle on a secluded road to ensure the steering now works correctly.
