How to Service a 2005 F-350 Ford Transmission

Servicing the transmission in a Ford F-350 consists of changing the fluid as well as the filters specified by the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Adhering to the suggested maintenance will ensure the vehicle's transmission will continue to work properly, and will assist in preventing future damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard screwdriver
  • 3/8 ratchet and sockets
  • Drain pan with at least eight-quart capacity
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Funnel
  • Torque wrench ft pounds and in pounds
  • Transmission fluid
  • Transmission filter
  • Transmission oil pan gasket

Removal

  • Ensure the engine and transmission are cool. Lift the vehicle off ground with a jack, and support with jack stands on all four sides of the vehicle.

  • Remove transmission fluid drain plug using a 3/8 ratchet and the correct size socket according to drain plug. If the transmission does not contain drain plug, loosen transmission oil pan bolts and remove side and front bolts. Allow the front bolts to drop slightly to let fluid drain.

Set bolts aside in bag or tray to keep from getting lost.

  • Carefully remove transmission oil pan. If pan does not come off freely, carefully pry on corners with a standard screwdriver.

  • Remove oil pan gasket and discard. Clean transmission oil pan surface with rag and cleaning solvent (this pan can be reused).

  • Remove old transmission oil filter by twisting and pulling up. Ensure the filter seals come off of transmission. Remove torque-converter cover with ratchet and socket, and allow fluid to drain.

Installation

  • Ensure gasket surface is clean and dry. Install new transmission oil pan gasket.

  • Install transmission oil pan and torque bolts to specified torque specifications. When doing so, work around pan, tightening each bolt a little at a time until specifications are reached.

  • Install torque-converter plug, followed by the cover.

  • Lower vehicle and add 6 1/2 quarts of automatic transmission fluid through the fill tube. Set the vehicle in park and apply parking brake. Start and run the vehicle at a high idle. Cycle shift lever through gears and then set back to park. Check transmission fluid and add ½ quart at a time until fluid level is reached
