How to Install a Briggs 394358 Fuel Filter

The Briggs fuel filter, model No. 394358, is used to filter the fuel in riding lawn mowers. The filter fits directly on the fuel line and filters out contaminants and particles to keep the fuel going to the engine of the mower clean. Although the exact location of the Briggs fuel filter varies depending on the kind of mower you have, installing the Briggs fuel filter into the fuel system is similar for many mowers.

Things You'll Need

  • Briggs 394358 fuel filter
  • Fuel line pliers
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Gloves
  • Soap and water
  • Disposable paper towels
  • Turn off your riding lawn mower if it was on. Open the hood.

  • Clamp the fuel line with the fuel line pliers on the inlet side of the fuel filter. This side has more pressure coming to it. The fuel line pliers prevent fuel from spurting out of the fuel line.

  • Clamp down on the nose of the tube ring with your needle-nose pliers to loosen the tube ring. Slide the tube ring away from the fuel filter.

  • Put on your gloves. Pull the fuel line off the fuel filter. Clean up any fuel that dribbles out of the fuel line onto the engine with the disposable towels.

  • Clamp down on the nose of the tube ring on the outlet side of the fuel filter with your needle-nose pliers. Slide the tube ring away from the fuel filter. Pull the fuel line off the fuel filter. Clean up any fuel that dribbles out of the fuel line onto the engine with the disposable paper towels.

  • Insert the inlet nozzle of the new fuel filter into the outlet fuel tube. Repeat this process for the inlet fuel tube. Slide the tube rings over the inlet and outlet nozzles of the fuel filter to secure the connection. Remove the fuel line pliers. If fuel spurted onto your skin, wash with soap and water.
