2000 Ford Focus SE Sedan Fuel Pump Replacement Instructions

The 2000 Ford Focus Sedan SE fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. Unfortunately, Ford did not install an access panel under the rear seat, so to replace the fuel pump you must drop the fuel tank from the vehicle. You will expose yourself to gasoline fumes -- so, as a precaution, make sure you complete the task in an open area free of flames.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Rubber mallet
  • Park the vehicle and turn off the engine. Pull the retaining tabs out of the exhaust heat shield using a pair of pliers. Pull the heat shield out from under the vehicle to expose the gas tank.

  • Remove the two bolts that secure the rear end of the gas tank straps to the underside of the Ford Focus using a socket and ratchet. The rear end of the straps are located close to the rear bumper. Have a second person hold the tank up while you remove the bolts.

  • Lower the rear of the tank onto the ground. The front of the tank remains connected to the gas hoses, and the front of the straps hold the tank at an angle since they were not removed from the vehicle.

  • Unplug the wiring harness from the top of the fuel pump bulkhead.

  • Turn the bulkhead counterclockwise using a screwdriver and a rubber mallet. The bulkhead is plastic to avoid the risk of creating sparks.

  • Pull the fuel pump free of the mounting bracket on the bottom of the bulkhead and replace it with the new pump.

  • Place the bulkhead onto the fuel tank and turn it clockwise to lock it in place. Use the screwdriver and mallet.

  • Plug the wiring harness back into the bulkhead.

  • Raise the tank back under the engine and secure it by tightening the tank straps in place using the bolts, socket and ratchet.

  • Place the exhaust heat shield under the Focus and push the retaining clips back into place.
