How to Tune Up a 2001 Honda Odyssey

The process for tuning up a 2001 Honda Odyssey requires less work than most vehicles because the Honda Odyssey uses a coil pack and not a distributor. This means you do not have to replace the distributor cap. The process for tuning up the Honda Odyssey requires that you change the spark plugs and the spark plug wires. This is a great task for the do-it-yourself mechanic looking to save money by avoiding the dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Remove the two bolts on top of the engine that keep the protective cover in place. Use a socket set to remove the bolts. Lift the cover off the engine and place it off to the side.

  • Locate the first of the six spark plugs. It is located on the front of the engine and secures to the engine head. Look down between the engine and the radiator fan on the driver's side. The spark plug has a thick black wire connected to it. This is the spark plug wire.

  • Remove the plug wire by grasping the wire as close to the spark plug as possible and then pull up on it. Lift he wire out of the engine to locate the other end of the wire. The other end connects to the coil pack near the firewall. Pull up on the other end of the wire and remove it from the coil pack.

  • Remove the spark plug from the engine head using a socket and ratchet. Thread the new plug into the engine head using your fingers to avoid cross threading the plug. Tighten it using the socket and ratchet.

  • Push the spark plug wire back on to the top of the spark plug until you feel it snap into place. Push the other end of the plug wire onto the coil pack until you feel it snap into place.

  • Locate the second and third spark plugs on the front of the engine. The second plug wire is about eight inches to the left of the first spark plug and the third is about eight inches to the left of the second spark plug. Repeat steps three, four and five with these two spark plugs.

  • Locate the second set of spark plugs on the backside of the engine. They correlate with the spark plugs on the front of the engine in placement. Repeat steps three, four and five with these three spark plugs.
