How to Replace the Santa Fe's Fuel Filter for Mileage

If you have driven your Hyundai Santa Fe for 30,000 miles or more you should replace the fuel filter to increase your fuel mileage. When a fuel filter clogs, it restricts the amount of fuel sent to the engine. Conventional wisdom would be that the less fuel you send to the engine the less you burn. However, when the engine does not get the appropriate amount of fuel, the computer recalibrates and the engine runs inefficiently. This causes excessive fuel burning, loss of power and eventually engine breakdown.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • socket set
  • Locate the fuel filter inside the frame rail directly below the driver side door. Use the replacement filter as a visual aid for locating the old filter.

  • Pry up the locking tabs on each end of the fuel filter using a flat head screwdriver. With the locks pried up, pull the front and rear gas lines free of the filter.

  • Remove the bolt that secures the fuel filter to the frame rail using a socket and ratchet. Discard the old filter.

  • Place the new filter against the frame rail. The filter has an arrow on one end of it. Face the arrow towards the front of the vehicle. Secure it to the frame rail using the bolt, socket and ratchet.

  • Slide the fuel lines onto each end of the filter and secure them by pushing down on the locking tabs.
