How to Replace a Buick Power Window Motor

A power window motor in a Buick provides the car's occupants with push button convenience. By depressing a window switch, the Buick's driver or passenger can open or close the window instantly. When the switch is pushed, it closes the power window circuit, which sends electricity to the power window motor. When the motor energizes, it turns a gear on the window regulator, which moves the window. You can replace a Buick power window motor with basic auto-repair skills and an hour of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim tool
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Packing tape
  • Socket set
  • Remove the power window switch from the Buick's door panel with the trim tool. Unplug the Buick's door harness from the switch by hand. Set the switch aside.

  • Remove the retaining screws from the Buick's door panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Put the screws aside and keep them together.

  • Pry the Buick's door panel off the door with the trim tool, moving around the edges of the door panel, a few inches at a time, to unseat the trim pins. Lift the Buick's door panel up and off the door by hand.

  • Raise the Buick's window by hand. Secure the window to the top of the door with packing tape to prevent it from falling while you continue the repair.

  • Remove the Buick's door harness connector from the power window motor, manually. Unbolt the Buick's power window motor from the window regulator and the door bracket with the socket set.

  • Replace the Buick's old power window motor with the new one by hand. Bolt the new window motor to the door bracket and window regulator. Plug the Buick's door harness connector into the new window motor.

  • Reinstall the Buick's door panel by reversing the removal procedure.
