Troubleshooting a DRL Toyota Camry

If the daytime running lamps on your Toyota Camry are malfunctioning, they should be replaced as soon as possible. The daytime running lamps are an important safety feature of your vehicle. The three most common issues with daytime running lamps are loose electrical connectors, burnt out bulbs, and broken fuses. The troubleshooting process for the daytime running lamps on your Camry is fairly simple and only requires a few minutes to perform.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloth
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb
  • Replacement fuse
  • Turn off the engine and open the hood of the Camry.

  • Remove the headlamp retaining screws from the top of the headlamp assembly. Depending on the year of your Camry, there could be anywhere from two to six screws.

  • Pull the assembly out of the vehicle. Lightly pull on the electrical connector at the rear of the assembly. If it comes out, secure it to the assembly by plugging it in.

  • Rotate the daytime running lamp socket on the assembly counterclockwise and remove it. The daytime running lamp socket is the smallest socket on the headlamp assembly. Pull the old bulb out of the socket and replace it with a new bulb. The type of bulb used depends on the year of your Toyota Camry. Older models use 1156 bulbs whereas new models tend to use H11 bulbs. Check your owner's manual to be sure.

  • Place the socket back into the assembly and rotate it clockwise. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reattach the screws to secure it. Test the daytime running lamps. If they are still malfunctioning, the issue may be with the fuse.

  • Remove the cover from the fuse box on the driver's side of the vehicle. Locate the daytime running lamp fuse in the fuse box. Newer Camry's have the location of each fuse printed on the underside of the fuse box cover. Older Camry's have "TAIL LMP" printed below the fuse. If the metal part of the fuse is no longer in one piece, it will have to be replaced.

  • Pull the fuse out of the fuse box and replace it with a new 15A fuse. Place the cover back onto the fuse box and close the hood.
