How to Remove the Radio in a 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Thanks to the aftermarket, there are lots of different parts available to make installing a new stereo in your vehicle a simple and easy process. Just buy a vehicle-specific dash kit and a vehicle-specific wiring harness, and you can install your own deck in under 30 minutes. Before you can install the new deck, you have to remove the old one. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1999 Jeep Cherokee, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Pry the plastic bezel that goes around the AC vents, climate controls and stereo using your hands. The easiest way to do this is to pull the panel by the top corner, then continue working your way from the top down until the panel is off of the dash.

  • Unbolt the stereo from the dashboard using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set.

  • Pull the stereo out of the dashboard using your hands and then unplug the wiring harness and antenna lead from the rear of the deck to free the unit from the dash.
