How to Remove an ABS Module

The ABS module of the vehicle is located on the firewall and is responsible for operating the Anti-Lock Braking System. The module is part of the power pump assembly and is attached by Torx screws. The ABS module can short out from faulty parts or other electric malfunctions, requiring that it be removed in order to replace the unit. Save yourself time and money by removing it on your own instead of having a mechanic do it for you.

  • Wood block
  • Tire tool
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stand
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Nut driver
  • Plastic drain pan
  • Set the parking brake and place a wood block behind one of the rear tires to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Loosen the lug nuts on the front driver's side tire one complete turn with a tire tool.

  • Lift the vehicle up with a floor jack and slide a jack stand under the axle near the front driver's side tire. Lower the vehicle so it is resting on the jack stand and move the floor jack out of the way.

  • Remove the lug nuts with the tire tool and take the tire off the wheel hub. Set the tire and lug nuts out of the way.

  • Detach the plastic fender liner on the inside of the wheel well by unfastening the 11 Torx screws that secure the liner with a Torx screwdriver. The wheel well is the void area of the vehicle frame behind the tire.

  • Take the plastic fender liner out of the wheel well and locate the windshield washer bottle inside the engine compartment above the wheel well. Unfasten the three bolts that secure the windshield washer bottle with a nut driver.

  • Place a plastic drain pan on the ground beneath the windshield washer bottle. Remove the rubber hose that is connected to the windshield washer bottle by hand and take the bottle off the firewall of the vehicle.

  • Locate the ABS module that sits behind the windshield washer bottle on the firewall. Unplug the power pump wire from the ABS module and unfasten the electrical wiring harness from the module by hand.

  • Unfasten the six Torx screws from the ABS module with a Torx screwdriver to remove it from the pump assembly. Remove the ABS module from the engine compartment.
