How to Replace a Wiper Arm on a Saturn LS

The wiper arm on a Saturn LS is attached to the wiper motor gear with a metric steel nut. This nut prevents the wiper arm from vibrating loose when the wiper is in motion. In order to remove the wiper motor, the wiper arm must be removed first. Once the wiper arm nut is removed, the wiper arm must be pulled off of the wiper motor gear with a special wiper arm puller. These pullers are available from auto parts stores and automotive tool manufacturers.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Ratchet, 3/8-inch
  • Socket set, 3/8-inch metric
  • Wiper arm puller
  • Replacement wiper arm
  • Replacement wiper arm nut
  • Place the Saturn's transmission in park or first gear (manual) and turn off the engine. Engage the emergency brake.

  • Pry the wiper arm nut cover (located at the base of the wiper arm) off with a small flat-head screwdriver. Remove the wiper arm nut with a metric socket and a 3/8-inch ratchet.

  • Attach the puller to the wiper arm according the manufacturer's instructions. Tighten the center screw on the puller using a 3/8-inch ratchet and a metric socket until the wiper arm is free from the wiper gear.

  • Install the Saturn's new wiper arm onto the wiper gear. Install a new wiper arm nut using the 3/8-inch ratchet and a metric socket. Replace the wiper arm nut cover. Test the wipers to ensure that they function properly.
