The 1998 Honda may have one of several different engines, but the belt replacement process is similar for all of them. The replacement process will take about 30 minutes using common tools found in most toolboxes. The majority of the automobiles use a serpentine belt, which is actually easier to replace than the old v-belts of days gone by. You should examine your belt on a regular basis and part of your normal maintenance routine. When you begin to notice signs of cracking or other damage on the belt, you should replace it as soon as possible.
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the nut.
Pivot the belt tensioner away from the belt using a proper size socket and ratchet. Remove the belt from the tensioner and then pull it off of the engine. Note the proper routing of the belt for replacement of the new one. Gently release the tensioner back to its original position. Do not allow it to simply spring back into place.
Put the new belt and route it properly around the pulleys. Turn the belt tensioner to the loose position with the socket and ratchet and slip the serpentine belt under it. Gently release the tensioner back to its original position. Reconnect the battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench.
