Oil Change Specifications for a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE

The 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE is a compact sedan that is a member of the fifth generation model range of Sentras. This generation of Sentra was only offered as a sedan, and the GXE was the middle trim level, above the XE and below the SE. The GXE models were all powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 126 horsepower. Oil changes are a relatively cheap form of preventative maintenance to protect your Sentra's engine, although you should know your vehicle's oil change specifications.

Oil Capacity for QG18DE Engine

  • The oil refill capacity for the 1.8-liter engine is 2 7/8 quarts when you replace the filter during the oil change. If you do not replace the oil filter, the engine requires 2 5/8 quarts of oil.

Recommended Oil Type

  • Nissan recommends an energy conserving oil to improve fuel economy. Only oils with a API certification symbol should be used. A 5W-30 viscosity oil is recommended for temperature ranges from -20 degrees Fahrenheit and above. 10W-30 and 10W-40 can be used above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Dusty environments, towing and other higher demand driving situations dictate more frequent oil changes.

Oil Filter

  • Nissan recommends only using Nissan brand oil filters available from your local dealership. When fitting the oil filter, tighten it with your fingers, then use a wrench to tighten another two-thirds of a turn to ensure proper fitting.

Oil Pan Bolt

  • The oil pan bolt, also known as the drain bolt, is often damaged by over tightening. When replacing the bolt after draining old oil, you should tighten to 22 to 29 feet-pounds with a torque wrench. This will prevent over tightening the bolt and damaging the oil pan.
