How to Install a Water Pump on a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix

The Grand Prix was produced by the Pontiac subdivision of General Motors from 1962 to 2008, first as a full-sized luxury car, later as a mid-sized model. The 2005 Grand Prix has a V-6 engine that is cooled by a standard water-coolant system controlled by a water pump. The pump is located behind the power steering pulley, and you have to take off a few belts to remove the water pump and install a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Socket wrench with socket set
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Razor blade
  • Lift the hood and prop it open. Place the drain pan underneath the radiator. Loosen and remove the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator to drain the coolant into the pan.

  • Loosen the four bolts that hold the water pump pulley to the water pump, using the socket wrench. Do not remove the bolts completely.

  • Remove the serpentine belt by placing the end of the serpentine belt tool on the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley is in the center of the engine and has a large square nut in its center. Pry the pulley counterclockwise to release the tension on the belt. Slip the belt off the pulleys.

  • Remove the bolts holding the pulley to the water pump.

  • Remove the two bolts that hold the power steering pump to the engine. The power steering pump has a plastic cylinder on top of it that's where the power steering fluid is added. Remove the two bolts holding the pump on. Allow it to rest on the oil filter housing just below it.

  • Remove the eight bolts that hold the water pump on. There are four large ones and four smaller ones. Pull the pump up and lift it out of the engine.

  • Remove the old water pump gasket. Scrape the gasket off with the razor blade. Be careful not to score the metal or the new pump will leak.

  • Set the new water pump and gasket in place. Tighten all eight bolts on the new pump.

  • Reinstall the power steering pump and its two bolts. Reinstall the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool. Replace the pulley on the water pump and tighten its bolts down.
