How to Change the TPS on a 1995 Ford Van E350

The throttle position sensor (TPS) on a 1995 Ford van E350 tells the computer where the driver's foot is on the accelerator. The TPS moves with the throttle. Occasionally, it can have a "dead spot." If the operator drives at a certain speed for long periods -- for example, 60 mph, common in a lot of highway driving -- that spot on the sensor can wear.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of sockets
  • Code scanner
  • Unhook the clips on the engine cover inside the cab. Lift the engine cover off and set it out of the way.

  • Locate the throttle position sensor on the driver's side of the throttle valve assembly in the center of the intake manifold. Unplug the TPS electrical harness connector by pressing in on the tabs and lifting the plug off the sensor's pigtail. Unbolt the two retaining bolts using the appropriate socket. Pull the TPS off the throttle valve assembly.

  • Slide the new TPS on the throttle valve assembly. Reinstall the two retaining bolts and tighten them firmly. Do not over-tighten them, as the plastic will crack. Plug in the sensor's wiring harness connector. Reinstall the cover.

  • Plug a code scanner into the port reader under the driver's-side dash. Press "Read" to read the codes. Press "Erase" to erase the TPS code.
