How to Disable the Seat Belt Chime on an '08 Chevy Silverado

If you turn your vehicle's key to the "on" postion and your seat belt is not buckled, you'll likely hear a chime and see a seat-belt icon illuminate on your dashboard. For those of you who have little patience for that chime, you may consider disabling it. Disabling your2008 Chevy Silverado's seat belt chime may be legal if you use your vehicle on your own property or if you want the chime off while you're sitting in the car, listening to the radio, or working on or near the Silverado. Chevy does not recommend driving without a seat belt, and in most states wearing a seat belt while driving or riding in a car is mandated by law.

  • Purchase two seat belt extenders for your Chevy Silverado. You may be able to get these for free from your local Chevy dealer.

  • Insert the male end of the seat belt extenders into the female ends of the front seat belt buckles.

  • Cut the excess seat-belt-extender strap material from the seat belt extender. Your vehicle's seat belt chime will be disabled as long as the seat belt extender remains. Remove the extender to buckle your seat belt before driving on public roads.
