The radiator is an integral part of the VW Beetle's engine coolant system. If you allow the radiator to operate without performing regular maintenance, gunk and grime can accumulate in the system. That is why every other year it is prudent to flush the radiator in the car. To complete this flush, you do not need in-depth knowledge of auto mechanics, just follow some relatively simple steps.
Move the VW Beetle to a level surface and set the parking brake.
Open the hood and check the external temperature of the radiator. If the radiator is cool to the touch, then continue. If not, wait until it is cools off before proceeding.
Twist the radiator cap one full turn, step back from the radiator for a few seconds and then completely remove the radiator cap. Even though the radiator is cool, there may still be internal pressure, pausing allows this pressure to escape.
Position your drain container, with at least a two-gallon capacity, underneath the radiator and directly under the VW Beetle's drain plug. Remove the radiator drain plug with a crescent wrench and allow the old coolant to drain completely into the container.
Pour the old coolant into a sealable container and place the drain container back into its original position. Be sure the used coolant doesn't come into contact with any people or pets, as it's very toxic to both.
Close the drain plug and fill it with distilled water to rid it of any remaining sediment or grime. Next, open the plug and let the water drain into the bucket. Repeat the process until the flush water is free of debris. Then, replace the drain plug and dispose of the radiator flush liquid.
Fill the radiator to within an inch of the top lip with fresh coolant. The manufacturer recommends you use G12 plus coolant for the VW Beetle. See the resources section for more information.
Start the engine and allow it to run until the cooling fan turns on twice. Then, switch off the engine and check the coolant level. If it remained the same, then the flush is complete. If not, add more coolant until it is full again.
Replace the radiator cap and close the hood of the VW Beetle.
