How to Replace a 1999 Headlight Switch in a Jeep Wrangler

The 1999 Jeep Wrangler's headlight switch is incorporated into its multifunction switch. There are two multifunction switches: one on the right, and one on the left. The left-side multifunction switch serves as the headlight switch. Replacing this switch is not a difficult task. Even if you do not have experience working on vehicles, you should be able to replace it within 30 minutes. Follow the safety recommendations to prevent bodily harm. Use only a factory replacement headlight. The information is applicable to all 1997 to 2005 Jeep Wranglers, regardless of trim level or engine configuration.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement left-side multifunction switch
  • Unhook the black (negative) cable from the Jeep's battery prior to beginning the procedure. This keeps you safe and protects you from shock. Raise your steering column to the highest position if your Jeep has the tilt steering feature; this makes accessing the switch easier.

  • Remove the two Phillips screws from the bottom half of the steering column. The steering column is composed of two pieces. Remove the bottom piece to gain access to the left multifunction switch.

  • Lower the steering column to its lowest position, if applicable. Squeeze together the sides of the top steering-column piece. Lift it up to remove it from the assembly. This gives you full access to the multifunction switch.

  • Remove the two Phillips screws that attach the headlight switch to the steering column. Depress the two tabs on the side to release the switch from its connection; pull it away to disconnect it.

  • Attach the new headlight/multifunction switch to the steering column. Push the tabs to engage them, and then insert and tighten the two Phillips screws.

  • Push the top part of the steering-column cover onto the steering column. It should snap into place. Attach the bottom cover and tighten the two Phillips screws to complete the procedure.
